Decluttering your current space before moving home or office can seem like a daunting process. With all the cupboards and rooms around your home needing to be cleared out, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and unmotivated.
However, taking the task one step at a time can be the key to getting started and finished before you know it. Here are 5 tips to get you started and on the right track in preparation for moving home.
1. Start with 10 Minutes
Getting started is usually the hardest part. Even the advice of ‘starting right now if a task takes less than 2 minutes doesn’t apply much here as some rooms will take longer than that to fully clear out.
With decluttering, we suggest starting with 10 minutes which is enough time to clear a few cupboards or even a bathroom. To help you prepare for your move, we sell boxes and packing tape that you can use to begin decluttering your home that we will then buy back from you once your move is complete.
2. Reflect on the Past 6 months
It can be hard to throw out certain items with many doubts flowing through your head. “What if I need this?” and “I might use this soon” are two common thoughts everyone has when picking to keep or throw away items.
We suggest reflecting on how much time you have spent using or wearing that particular item in the last number of months. Did you go through the same doubts last time to only put it back in the cupboard and not touch it again until now? If so, we suggest putting this in the ‘get rid of’ pile.
If you are still in doubt, the item can easily be placed in one of our secure storage facilities so it’s not taking up space in your new home but is always there if you need it.
3. Declutter Storage Areas First
Decluttering doesn’t have to start with clearing the biggest room in the house. Pick one cupboard or unit and start there. A work desk, a make-up drawer or a bookshelf make great starting points.
The small win of clearing out a desk might motivate you to keep going or might make you feel so satisfied that it will be easier to get started next time.
4. Fill An Entire Bin bag
Setting goals and milestones is important for any activity. An alternative approach to doing 10 minutes or decluttering one specific area is to try and fill one bin bag of items that can either be given away to charity, put into storage or put in the bin.
This will force you to be harsher with each item. Also, the bigger the item thrown away, the quicker the bag will fill up AND your home will have the extra space from throwing away bigger items than smaller ones. This can also speed up our house clearance process when we arrive to help you move. It’s a win-win.
5. View Your Home As A New Guest
Trying to declutter the space you are constantly living in can be difficult as you are blind to the mess and unneeded items that will be around you every day.
Try viewing your home as a first-time guest. What would you think of the items lying around? Could things be squared up? Viewing your home through the eyes of someone who has just walked in for the first time could certainly be an eye-opener.
