How To Manage The Emotional Stress Of Moving House

Written by Lorraine Hanlon on

Moving house can be emotionally draining, especially if there is only one or two of you packing and unpacking a full house worth of belongings. Luckily, as long as you take time for yourself and follow our tips, it doesn’t have to overwhelm you.

1. Get Help

You don’t have to go through the process yourself. It doesn’t matter whether you are single, married, divorced, or a family of 10, extra hands make light work. Our expert house removals team has over 50 years experience and will make keeping your move stress free our top priority.

If you have a lot to pack, move or unpack, our services are available to you in order to get you out of your old home and into your new one in no time. Don’t forget to ask other family members or friends for help packing or unpacking. You never know who might spare a few hours of their time to help, but you’ll never find out if you don’t ask.

2. Give Yourself Enough Time

It’s never too early to start packing up your belongings. You can start by packing rooms that you use least often so that your day to day behaviours aren’t impacted. Don’t wait until moving day to pack up all your glasses and mugs, the chances are you can pack up the majority of these ahead of time and keep one or two aside for the last couple of days.

3. Relax At Night

Your brain needs time to switch off. Spend a good amount of time during the days getting belongings in order, but take nights to relax. Lifting boxes all day is heavy work (trust us…) and can be very taxing on your body.

The nights are the perfect time to watch a movie, order a takeaway and switch off.

4. Have A Box Of Essentials

Packing up all the essentials in one or two boxes means that you don’t need to unpack everything straight away. If you move in at night, you’ll have everything you need to rest up for the night and start fresh tomorrow morning.

Your essentials box may include toiletries, phone charger, bed linen, pyjamas, cleaning spray and tea/coffee.

5. Put Some Music On

You’d be surprised at how much having some music on can relax you. Packing and unpacking can be laborious, but with your favourite playlist on, the time will go much quicker.

6. Use A Checklist

There are plenty of moving house checklists on the web. These will include who to notify, what new services to sort (GP etc.), utility suppliers to arrange new gas and electricity, and much more.

Having a checklist means that you have a logical order of things to tick through and you can take comfort that once you have done everything on the list, you’re good to go.

7. Take Breaks

Moving can be both physically and emotionally exhausting. Carrying heavy boxes and lugging large items into your car can be physically draining, while moving from, potentially, the house you grew up in or have been in for most of your life can be an emotional time.

Make sure to take long breaks at lunch and throughout the day to not overwhelm you or your muscles from non-stop work. If you lift too many heavy items without adequate rest, you run the risk of injuring yourself and that is likely to put you under more stress.

You don’t need to move on your own, even if you are on your own. Our expert removals team has a variety of services to help you and reduce your stress levels. Have a box of essentials, put some music on, use a checklist and remember that it’s never too early to start the process. One of the best things you can do to lower moving stress levels is to hire our expert removal team, who can help you before, during and after your house move.
